Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP, human/porcine/rat/ovine sequence) is a 28-amino-acid neuropeptide belonging to the secretin/glucagon peptide superfamily. VIP's sequence is remarkably conserved across mammals — the human, porcine, rat, and ovine forms are identical or differ by no more than a single residue — reflecting strong evolutionary constraint on a signaling molecule with broad, conserved physiological roles across the autonomic nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, and vasculature. VIP signals through two closely related class B (secretin-family) G-protein-coupled receptors, VPAC1 and VPAC2, both of which couple primarily to adenylate cyclase/cAMP signaling.
